Junior Welfare League of Huntington, Inc. - IN HUNTINGTON FOR HUNTINGTON SINCE 1933
On August 13, 1933, seven women assembled and began the organization known as the Junior Welfare League of Huntington, Inc.  The function of the JWL was then, as it is now, to assist the needy of Huntington Township. The JWL relies on referrals from educational and social service workers, as well as from doctors, school officials and clergy of all faiths.  From these reliable referrals, the application process is initiated, the level of aid is considered and every attempt is made to fulfill all appeals.  Our goal is to provide assistance to our neighbors in need while enabling them to maintain their anonymity, their independence and their dignity. We are a grass roots organization comprised solely of volunteers.  We have no national affiliation; therefore requests for assistance can be expedited through the approval process without the red tape of a larger organization.  Our membership is comprised of residents of Huntington Township, who serve to meet the needs of their neighbors.

Because we have no national affiliation or administrative costs,
100%
of all our proceeds go directly back to the Huntington Community.

We are able to raise funds for charitable purpose through events and fundraisers.  In recent years, we have begun to solicit underwriting for our events.  The generosity of the business community has made the JWL even more profitable and better able to serve a wider range of requests.  For information on becoming a sponsor email jrwelfareleague@yahoo.com.

Programs
LIFT FUND-
The JWL’s most important operation, the LIFT FUND, was established in 1956.  It was so named because it provides a crucial boost to individuals by granting them one-time emergency financial aid.  Most often, our recipients are normally independent families whose means are insufficient to see them through an unexpected crisis.   Monies from this fund help “lift” hundreds of Huntington residents out of emergency situations by providing funds to pay hospital, medical and dental bills, mortgage and rent payments, food, clothing, utility bills and a myriad of other expenses.

SUMMER CAMP CASES-
Especially interested in the well-being of children, the JWL each year pays camp expenses for a number of Huntington youth who otherwise would not be able to attend camp.  These are usually children dealing with difficult domestic environments who benefit tremendously from their camp experiences.

HOLIDAY CHARITIES-
December is a particularly festive month for the JWL.  Each year members “adopt” Huntington families and provide them with gifts of food, clothing, toys, household items and gift cards to grocery and department stores.  In addition, each Member donates a special gift for a specific child.  We are able to provide families with all the trimmings for a truly memorable holiday.

HEALTH CARE SCHOLARSHIP-
Also established in 1956, the Health Care Fund provides scholarships to individuals dedicated to nursing and related professions.  Awards are based on financial need and scholastic aptitude.

                                                                                   YOUTH IN
PHILANTHROPY AWARD-
This recent addition is a monetary award presented to a local High school senior in recognition of their dedication to philanthropy and community service.

CHARITABLE CHILDREN-
In an effort to raise socially concious children, members of the JWL often include our children in our efforts. Throughout the year, the children assist with many of our events.  Most recently, we participated in "Backpacks For Success" in association with Town Hall to provide backpacks for children of low-income families in the Huntington school district.

 BACKPACKS FOR SUCCESS-
In 2010, more than 192 backpacks were distributed to Huntington school district students in need.  Backpacks were donated by CA and stuffed by children and friends of League members  Councilwoman Glenda Jackson was on hand to help distribute backpacks.

Please donate to this worthy cause today by sending a check made payable to The JWL of Huntington and mail it to PO Box 107 Huntington, NY 11743 Thanks for your generous support of our mission.(Checks should be marked Backpacks on the memo line)
